Woodworking tools are tools that use cutting methods to process wood into the required shape and size. Woodworking tools are of two types: hand-held and machine-used. Machine-used woodworking tools are used in batch and mass production. Machine-used woodworking tools are divided into five categories: saws, blades, milling cutters, drills, and tenon processing tools.
Common woodworking tools:
1. Woodworking saws: tools used for sawing wood, including circular saws, band saws, strip saws, chain saws, and barrel saws, with circular saws and band saws being the commonly used. When the saw cut is parallel to the wood grain, it is called longitudinal cutting (splitting), and when the saw cut is perpendicular to the wood grain, it is called cross-cutting (truncation). The circular saw tooth shape used in the latter is different from that of the former, to facilitate cutting fibers when cross-cutting
2. Blade: A flat-plate tool with a cutting edge, used for plane processing or sectioning of wood. Blades with different parameters are installed on various machine tools, and different processing methods can be performed, such as planing, rotary cutting, scraping, and shearing. Planing is used for plane processing, and the blade or workpiece generally moves in a straight line. Under certain conditions (such as reducing the cutting angle), planing can cut veneer, which is a high-quality decorative material. During peeling, the wood rotates around a fixed center, and the blade moves continuously in a straight line toward the center, cutting the wood into strips of veneer (veneer) for the production of plywood. Shearing is used to cut veneers during plywood production.
3. Woodworking milling cutter: a rotary tool with one or more teeth. Through the relative movement of the workpiece and the milling cutter, each tooth cuts off the excess of the workpiece intermittently in turn. The installation card method of woodworking milling cutters is divided into two types: hole-set milling cutters and shank milling cutters. The structure of the set milling cutter is integral, inlaid, and combined. Milling cutters are widely used in the production of joinery to process planes, forming surfaces, mortises, tenons, slots, and carvings. Compared with milling cutters used for cutting metal, woodworking milling cutters have larger front and back angles to obtain sharp edges and reduce cutting resistance. Another feature is that the number of cutting teeth is small and it has a larger chip space. In addition to tool steel and alloy steel, woodworking milling cutters also widely use carbide to improve production efficiency and tool life.
4. Woodworking drill bit: A woodworking drill bit is a rod-shaped or spiral tool with a cutting edge on the end, which is used to process through holes or blind holes. The difference between a woodworking drill bit and a woodworking end mill is that there is no cutting edge on the side. In addition to the main cutting edge, a woodworking drill bit has a sharp countersunk cutting edge on the outer edge to cut off wood fibers and make the side of the hole smoother.
5. Mortise processing tool: There are many types of special tools used to process mortise holes, including hollow square chisels (Figure 5), hollow square chisels with drill bits, chain drilling knives, and machine chisels. The end face of the hollow square chisel has a crescent-shaped cutting edge, which is used to cut square corners around the drill hole. The hollow square chisel with a drill bit is a tool that combines a drill bit and a square chisel, and the drill bit is installed inside the hollow square chisel. A chain drill is a multi-tooth tool that rotates continuously and is similar to milling or longitudinal sawing when processing mortises. When a machine chisel is used to drill a mortise, the chisel makes a reciprocating cutting motion up and down.
